The primary mandate of the Restoration Group is the full recovery of the lake to its former state of nature prior to the 1890s. This will not be easy to accomplish, however, this city has made great progress in restoring the natural vegetation that once covered our hills and was almost completely destroyed therefore we hope the same can be achieved with our water resources.
Our Group, together with all three levels of government has done much to make this area attractive to local residents and visitors. Much remains to be done to improve the quality of the water and to maintain our waterfront and hilltop parks, plus the other recreational facilities that so many enjoy.
Over the past few years we have experiment with geese control and have found that a short fence keeps these birds from soiling our waterfront walkway and destroying the grass areas. It is planned to build an ecological study and bird viewing area on the shoreline of the new community centre, Minnow Lake Place, so that ducks and geese will frequent this area thereby taking some of the pressure off the beaches and thereby improve the water quality in these areas.
Development of the Minnow Lake Place Site (the former St. Jean School continues For further details or to participate please contact MLRG chair John Lindsay at 560-6087.
